Today is “So Low Down is Up” Day. A day I look forward to every year–tomorrow there is more daylight than today!!
I write about it annually–last year, and the year before that, and the year before that.
It’s Husband’s wedding anniversary with his late wife–they got married 30 years ago today. He spent some of the day looking through pictures, remembering their hopes and dreams on that day. Husband was melancholy today–Car was a wonderful woman who desperately wanted to live–and he watched her lose that painful struggle slowly over years. He loves his life now–and loved his life then, too.
This year, December 21 feels like darkness even more than most years. With new restrictions coming at the stroke of midnight on the day of longest darkness–it was the darkest metaphorically as well as literally.
Omicron was a sucker punch that feels unfair.
Hope is a lot of work.
I want to invite you to feel the dark of defeat today. This is hard. We don’t have to fix it, look on the bright side, or figure out how to make it better today.
I spoke about the darkness of the season at my church a few weeks ago–looking at how darkness is a place of chaos and distress.
We so long for the
- routine of familiarity
- knowing what to expect
- predictable order
It’s hard to have hope in the chaos. When you hit that wall, it’s too hard to knock it down. The door–it cannot be chopped down. Not today.
You can try again tomorrow.
