When we moved into 1483 Pembina about 15 months ago, we were strangers in the building. The other tenants in the building were friendly and welcomed us…but I’m not sure I knew to expect much more than an occasional “hi” as we passed in the hallway.
We’ve gotten to know some of our neighbours cuz we’ve been accepting deliveries of packages…Melanie is at her desk from Monday-Friday from 8:30-4:00 and the others often come and go. After she signs for the packages, she puts a post it note on the door. So…we’ve had a chance to do some more interaction.
We took it to a whole new, ball-sy level recently, when our therapy room became too warm in spring to run our Anger Management (TDC) group…with the heat of the projector and several folks packed into the smallish room, it was more than a little stuffy. We noticed that the Long Term and Continuing Care Association of Manitoba (LTCAM) had a pleasant and spacious board room…and we asked if we could use it for groups.
They surprised us by taking it one level further and invited us to become corporate members. Sorta feels like we asked for a quarter and got a dollar, with how they offered to work with us. They are great about letting us use the board room, and we intend to be the best corporate members we can be. They have been super generous and easy to work with as we have gotten to know them. (We continue to take in their packages when they are not around. 😉
(While we’re getting the kinks out on the new site, you’ll have to click on the blog post title to be able to view the video as a video, not as a jumble of code. The “website guy” is on vacation so we’ won’t get this repaired for a few weeks)
Winnipeg is a big city, and the warmth of our LTCAM and the other neighbours in our building is so fantastic. In a world that often is headlined by bad news, bad neighbours, cruelty, rudeness, cutbacks, and general grumpiness, it’s been an encouragement to me personally to have the friendly, ask-for-a-lot-but-then-get-offered-even-more generosity, kindnesses of a friendly neighbour in Suzanne and her crew at the LTCAM!
(We’re sending them flowers next week because we like ’em so much, but don’t tell them, k? Shhhh)
