The cost of the beauty brainwash

Our culture today has made it hard to see true beauty.  Folks are literally bombarded with thousands of images per day of “beautiful women”.

Problem is, those beautiful women in the ads don’t exist.

The women that posed for those ads, wished they looked like the women in those ads. Beauty that is unreachable and unhealthy and unrealistic is pumped into our brain thousands of times per day. Cindy Crawford wishes she looked like Cindy Crawford.

That messes with our heads.

Ask any woman what her experience of bathing suit shopping is like.  It’s not pretty…it’s an occasion to beat ourselves up for how we look in the mirror.  The vast majority of teenage girls don’t like their bodies.

But it messes with guys’ heads too.

It’s hard to be told repeatedly day after day, month after month, year after year what female beauty is…and not buy into it.

And that’s unfortunate for all of us.

I loved how Dustin Hoffman put it…

It’s poignant for Hoffman to realize at a profound level that he has been duped…and it has cheated him of valuable conversation and relationships.

To be in a world where men are able to see past the billboards and the ads and the cultural brainwash to understand the depth of women, and how we all get cheated when we base a woman’s value on her appearance.
