I took this year off of teaching as a self proclaimed “sabbatical-type” year…this year I have only one job and I’m focusing on it, able to take a course in clinical supervision so that I might be a more effective clinical supervisor, and getting my certification in Brené Brown’s The Daring Way program. It’s given me a chance to get involved in various things I’d otherwise have to limit…chatting with Dahlia Kurtz on CJOB on Thursday afternoons lately, etc.
But, the School of Occupational Therapy at the University of Manitoba still has a piece of my heart…it seems like there is a reason to still get there for a meeting once in a while, and it’s nice to smile at the friendliness of faculty and staff. Even though I’m only ever there part time, they are so warm and friendly…and include me as a part of them. Although looking after all the little pieces of teaching wears on me, being in the school and around really brilliant, creative, passionate scholars who welcome me to be a part of them…well, that’s a kind of special that warms me from the inside out.
October was National Occupational Therapy month, and the O.T. students at the University of Manitoba did a video that had me smile on a bunch on levels:
I recognize faces of students and faculty with bright smiles. Smiling people make me smile.
I was reminded of all the little things I do that make me happy.
My favourite things about this video:
The variety of things that make people happy. The courage people have to be genuine, cute, endearing, creative and off-the-wall with their responses.
The way the line on the white board gets a little mutilated somewhere along the line, and nobody fixes it…they just fill it in with marker and keep going. Imperfections shouldn’t stop anybody. Ever.
The way it reminds me I belong to a profession that helps people with life satisfaction.
Thanx OT students for this video. What makes me happy? Well, one of the things that does is watching this video!!
