Every once in a while, during regular life of shopping, running errands, getting things done, meeting the busy demands of regular life, we are surprised by beauty. A moment where we are reminded of truth, where out souls have a chance to be refreshed by witnessing a moment that has us take pause, and pulls us from our regular day, to remember what is true, and significant, and lovely…and suddenly we feel vaguely refreshed. Our souls feel lighter, and our day carries on a little differently.
For me this week, a friend dropped off a caramel apple one evening. We hadn’t connected in a while, she knows I love them with a passion…and she just wanted me to know she was thinking of me. It wasn’t my birthday, no significant anniversaries…it was “just because”. I haven’t eaten it yet…it’s too much fun seeing it every time I open the fridge…remembering a friend’s spontaneous random act of kindness to me.
Imagine the surprise and delight of shoppers at Macy’s just a few Saturdays ago as people were milling about and there was suddenly a “Random Act of Culture”. The Opera Company of Philadelphia was instrumental in bringing it together to perform one of the Knight Foundation’s “1000 Random Acts of Culture” which they’ll be doing over the next three years across the country. Accompanied by the Wanamaker Organ – the world’s largest pipe organ – the singers burst into song at exactly noon.
This is TOO much fun to watch the astonished and delighted faces of shoppers who were suddenly blessed to find themselves in the middle of a beautiful concert:
