I remember how Halloween lets kids “try on” ways of being elegant, or brave, or sophisticated, or grown up and they get to feel what its like to be a grown up when they wear doctor’s scrubs or an electrician’s belt or a princess costume.
And they get to challenge their fears and conquer “scariness” as they become the scary one, and scaring their little brother, their classmates and their parents over and over again in a way that has them giggling and realize that sometimes “scary” isn’t scary, and they master fears.
Face paint that transforms them into a wild animal or a silly clown or a cartoon character…and the joy of pretend and make believe and giggles, and being out after dark and having grown ups admire your costume…so much goodness.
There’s a lot about Halloween that I don’t like…its a scary time for folks who don’t understand it because they are new to Canada, and scary for those who have been exposed to dark and difficult things. I get that. We don’t do scary things around our place…we focus on the imagination and pretend part of it.
A big part of Halloween is the silliness of it…the chance to laugh and be creative and pretend and use goofy voices and share candy back and forth…so much goodness. Rod got into the silliness of it all, and made this up as a greeting from Jibjab:
Betcha never seen a bunch’o’therapists be quite so silly, huh?
Thanx Rod!
